Former India and Karnataka fast bowler David Johnson (52) passed away after falling from the balcony of his residence in Bangalore.

Johnson, who had played two Tests for India in 1996, had been battling health issues and was discharged from a local hospital just three days ago.

Johnson’s close friend confirmed to CricketNext.com that he had gone out to the balcony to light a cigarette when the tragic incident occurred. However, It remains unclear whether Johnson slipped accidentally or if there were other factors involved.

“This morning, he wanted to go to the balcony and his wife told the watchman to keep an eye out. He could not walk properly. He was in the hospital last week and in bad shape physically. We don’t know what exactly happened, but it is unfortunate. He was near the balcony to light a cigarette and he fell down, But, whether he slipped or was it intentionally, we cannot be sure," added Johnson’s friend.

Johnson, born in 1971, played 39 FC games, picking 125 wickets at 28.63 and 33 List-A matches, picking 41 wickets at 31.46 for Karnataka. He debuted in the 1992-93 season and played his final domestic season in 2001.

Johnson, considered one of the fastest bowlers of his era, earned his India call-up in 1996 at the expense of an injured Javagal Srinath, when he was drafted in for the one-off Test against Australia at the Feroz Shah Kotla in 1996, on the back of consistent performances in the domestic circuit, including 10 for 152 against Kerala in the 1995-96 Ranji Trophy season.

Johnson’s second and final Test appearance came in on the tour of South Africa the same year, but he only played one Test in that series, picking up the wickets of Herschelle Gibbs and Brian McMillan.

Remembering Johnson, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and former teammates expressed their condolences.
