Srinagar: A CBI team arrived in the city on Thursday, to start investigations into the alleged sex racket that has sparked protests across the Kashmir Valley over the past fortnight, officials said.
The six-member team led by an officer of DIG rank will gather relevant documents from Jammu and Kashmir Police, they said.
The state government handed over the investigation of the case to the CBI following widespread demonstrations and protest rallies.
The unearthening of the scandal took the Kashmir Valley by storm, as protestors accused police of shielding politicians, police and security officers and influential businessmen who were allegedly involved in the racket.
The officials said the CBI team would conduct "preliminary investigations" in the city and decide on registering a case only after going through the data made available to it.
The police have arrested five persons including, Sabeena, the alleged kingpin of the sex racket, so far.
The scandal came to light, following the emergence at Habbakadal in downtown Srinagar of a 30-second porn CD that allegedly showed a minor girl in the nude.
