At least 19 people were killed and over 40 people were injured in clashes during a drive to evict illegal occupants a piece of land in Jawahar Bagh in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.
Malini hit out at the Samajwadi Party-led government in UP. "This illegal encroachment was happening for a long time but SP government did not do anything", the MP lashed out.
"I did not realise that this will turn out to be such a serious matter", she added.
BJP President Amit Shah sent party national secretary Srikant Sharma to Mathura to take a stock of the situation.
IG (Law and Order) HR Sharma said around 3,000 encroachers pelted stones and later opened fire at the police team trying to evict them.
The police force had gone to the area following an order of the Allahabad High Court.
In retaliation, the police too opened fire and used tear gas to disperse the crowd. More than 200 people have been detained following the violence.
Over two years ago, the Swadhin Bharat Andolan activists, had occupied hundreds of acres of land of Jawahar Bagh on the pretext of 'dharna'.
