Call for reforms in Vice Chancellor search

After breaking new ground in the selection procedure for Vice Chancellors (V-Cs), senior academic and State Planning Commission Member (Education) E Balagurusamy has now called for reforms in constituting search committees which shortlist V-C aspirants.

Blowing the whistle on the credibility of search committees in a note to the Governor-Chancellor, Balagurusamy highlighted a major lacuna that there were no prescribed guidelines or qualifications for a person to be nominated to the search committees.

“As a consequence, all kinds of people are nominated to search committees... There are instances where mediocre persons with doubtful character and integrity and with dubious intentions or vested interests are nominated to the search committees,” he has pointed out.

The note was submitted in his personal capacity to Governor K Rosaiah two days ago. Pointing out that the UGC has prescribed among other things a 10-year experience as professor in a university system as minimum qualification for V-C, Balagurusamy said this necessitated the nomination of only those who are equally or better-qualified as members of search committees.
