VISAKHAPATNAM: Two days after the murder of hockey player Ganireddy Bhaskar Rao in the city, his close friend and a budding woman hockey player R Meena committed suicide on Tuesday by setting herself afire at her home at Shanthinagar in Kailasapuram area.Bhaskar Rao was murdered by another hockey player K Ratna Kumar late Saturday night following a heated argument during new year celebrations in a room at DLB Grounds in the city.Police said Meena,in her suicide letter, held no one responsible for her death. Since Bhaskar and she were close friends since school days, she was unable to cope with his death, she said in the letter. Meena, 20, who had participated in several tournaments, was a final year B.Sc student of Mrs AVN College here. She was considered one of the emerging stars of women's hockey in the city.June Gallyot, hockey coach, said Meena was a sensitive girl, brilliant in both academics and sports. Bhaskar and Meena were good friends living in the same area. "The girl took the extreme step as she was shocked with his death," she said. Friends of Meena said she lost her father in a road accident a few years ago. Her mother Krishnaveni became the bread winner of the family.Meena has two younger brothers, one of whom works as a carpenter.
