Bishop Mar Thomas Chakiath to retire

After a stint of 24 years, Mar Thomas Chakiath, auxiliary bishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese, will retire from official duties on September 10. The archdiocese authorities said that Mar Chakiath will retire as he turns 75 this September.

“It is usual for a bishop to be relieved of the administrative duties when he turns 75. Mar Chakiath will lead a retired life at Niveditha Institute for Religious Formation and Fellowship, a training establishment under the archdiocese in Aluva,” said the diocesan spokesperson.

During his term as a priest and a bishop, Mar Chakiath has served in various capacities. He was a member of the KCBC Commission for Justice and Peace, the secretary of the Senate of Priests, and a consultant of the archdiocese for three terms.

He is the founder-director of Niveditha Institute for Religious Formation and Fellowship and editor of “St Thomas Academy for Research Documentation”.

Born to Chakappan and Mariam Chakiath in September 1937 at Moonnamparambu, Karukutty,  Thomas joined the Sacred Heart Petit Seminary after completing school. After two years of formation, he joined the Pontifical Seminary, Aluva. He was ordained as a priest in Bombay in November, 1964.

He was consecrated as bishop on April 14, 1988, by the late Cardinal Mar Varkey Vithayathil.
