THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Five cameras will be imported from Belgium for the country’s first Vehicle-Actuated Traffic Signal that is being installed at Vellayambalam Junction. On Sunday, mechanics were busy installing the traffic lamps on the four arms of the junction for the first vehicle-actuated Wireless Traffic Signal Controller (Wi-Trac). ‘’We hope to commission the system before April 15. The cameras are being imported from Belgium. Four will be installed on each of the arms of the Junction, and the fifth one in the centre,’’ an official of the Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB), the agency implementiing the project, said. The cameras will record the movement of vehicles on each arm of the junction, and the inputs assessed by the ‘intelligent transport system’ will change the traffic signals accordingly. Another interesting fact about the system developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) is that it is quite eco-friendly - it runs on solar power. So if things go as planned, the people of Thiruvananthapuram should get the Wi-Trac as a Vishu gift.
