BANGALORE: The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP)  agenda for the year, seems to be increasing the number of trees in the city. The Palike’s plan includes planting six lakh saplings this year. The drive will see saplings being planted on unused defence land. After cutting trees and attracting opposition from the public as well as environmentalists, the BBMP seems to be in overdrive as far as planting tree saplings across the city is concerned. On Wednesday, the BBMP planted 1,000 saplings at the Madras Engineering Group (MEG)  Centre. “We are planning to plant another 4,000 saplings in the next one month,” said Shivashankar, Joint Commissioner, BBMP East zone. According to him, the 1,000 acre land has been lying vacant for a while now and hence the Palike has decided to plant saplings here. The plantation on unused land will also improve the environment on a micro level.Shivashankar further said that they have chosen defence land for two reasons, one it is lying vacant and the other it is a protected area. “We have brought many different types of plants,” he said. It can be recalled that the BBMP had planted 10,000 saplings in a sprawling 8,000 acre premises of Army Service Corps (ASC) Centre. Shivashankar said that the BBMP will also plant another 5,000 saplings in the Parachute Regiment School in RT Nagar.Shivashankar further said that in BBMP East zone, they are planning to plant 50,000 saplings. ‘‘We are waiting for the tree guards,’’ he said. The BBMP had also allotted Rs. 10 crores for the development of tree parks in the city. The drive is in accordance with the plan to remove ornamental plants and replace them with trees in most parks.
