HYDERABAD: From cheering for robots which can shoot hoops to hacking into a dedicated system - all formed a part of the first tech-fest of the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad, ‘Advaya’. The intra-institute fest was a techie’s dream as it had multiple events and challenges lined up for students across departments. The event was organized by the students and seven science clubs which represent different faculties of engineering. “As a new institute, we started the tech fest making the best of what is available to us. To make the event an inter-college program will require some more time,” said Aniket Deshmukh, science and technology secretary, IIT-H. Open to students from all streams and across disciplines, the Robot Basket Ball (see pic) was a big draw, where robots designed by the students had to qualify through multiple rounds by shooting a table-tennis ball through hoops by varying the height and range of the projectile, controlled mechanically. The winning team comprised three students of B. Tech first year, Yash Agarwal, Ankush Bansal and Raunak Choudhury. Their bot managed to shoot the maximum hoops in least time, controlled by rotating wheels in opposite directions so as to swivel the machine in the same direction. The car design competition hosted by the science club Torque saw students coming up with innovative solutions for problems commonly faced by drivers such as the need to change a tyre after every puncture.A programming competition and a hacking contest challenged the computer geeks while electrical engineering students set about correcting faulty circuits in record time. Science quizzes on man and the machine kept the grey cells ticking during the contest.“There were many participants and each contest had at least 30-40 teams vying to be in the race,” said Aniket Deshmukh. The faculty acted as judges to screen the contestants and declared the winners. Many students intend to develop their ideas as a semester project.
