Volunteers will visit schools to discuss with schools, PTAs etc on what needs to be done further so that all the terms under the RTE Act are implemented

Volunteers of the Shiksha ka Haq Abhiyan campaign, launched country-wide last November to promote awareness among people about the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, will now visit schools in the state to see how far the RTE Act has been implemented and to assess what needs to be done to further strengthen it.

This was announced by Education Minister P K Abdu Rabb at the state-wide inauguration of the school-level awareness programme of the Shiksha ka Haq Abhiyan which was held at  Government UP School, Ambalathara, near here on Wednesday.

“Starting on Thursday, a team of three volunteers will visit schools all over the state to discuss with school managements, parent-teacher associations and other educational activists on what needs to be done further so that all the terms under the RTE Act are implemented,” the Minister said.  As many as 4,770 educational volunteers have been trained at the state, district and block levels for the purpose. A team of three volunteers, comprising two students of Teacher Training Course (TTC), under the guidance of a cluster coordinator from the Cluster Resource Centre (CRC) of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), will approach each school.

“The purpose is to see how the terms of the RTE Act can be made practical in each and every school,” said A Shajahan, Director of Public Instructions. “For example, most schools have classes having 50 to 60 students, whereas the RTE Act states that the teacher to student ratio must be 1:30 or 1:35. We must understand what needs to be done in each school to meet the set ratio.”

The entire exercise is expected to be completed within 15 days.
