Aurangabad DM's Advice to Villager: 'Sell your Wife If you Can't Build Toilet'

New Delhi: In a brazen show of insensitivity, District Magistrate of Bihar's Aurangabad district Kanwal Tanuj on Saturday advised a villager to "go and sell your wife if you cannot protect the dignity of your wife".

The DM was speaking at a rally, spreading awareness about benefits of having one's own toilet, and the nuisance caused by open defecation. Tanuj first asked the attendees to raise their hands if they thought the value of their wife was less than that of Rs 12,000.

"There is no poor man who would put his wife at stake for Rs 12,000," Tanuj said, emphasising everyone should have their own toilet.

When a villager shouted that he didn't have money, an agitated Tanuj said, "Wait, I will talk to you."

"If this is the mentality, then go and auction the honour (wife) of your house, and tell the government that I cannot build a toilet."

Under the Shauchalay Nirman, Ghar Ka Sammaan - a scheme focussed on bringing an end to open defecation - Bihar government gives Rs 12,000 to a beneficiary to build toilets.
