KOZHIKODE: The CPM rank and file in Kozhikode woke up on Thursday to see their worst nightmare come true as news spread about the arrest of party district committee member and Onchiyam area secretary C H Asokan in connection with the T P Chandrasekharan murder case.What made the arrest all the more unpalatable to the general public was that the 60-year-old politician stayed pretty close to Chandrasekharan’s house.Having been an active member of Kerala NGO Union - CPM’s service organisation of government employees of the state - for nearly two decades, it was only in the late 2011 that Asokan became CPM’s Onchiyam area secretary.A quick glance over his steady climb in the party hierarchy makes interesting reading.Asokan started his political career with Independent Students Union, the student’s wing of Socialist Party.It was after joining the sales tax department in the 80s as lower division clerk that he began associating himself with the NGO union.He was elected general secretary of Kerala NGO Union at its state conference in Kannur in 2000, a position that he held till 2006.Asokan retired from the sales tax department as junior superintendent in 2007 only to take up party work on a full-time scale.It was this experience in the service organisation sector that paved the way for his rise to the upper echelons of the CPM.
