HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh is leading in Aadhaar card enrolment in the country. Till date, 1.80 crore persons have applied for the 12-digit unique number and a record number of 50 lakh Aadhaar numbers have been generated by the first week of July. The state government has taken up the enrolment for Aadhaar cards in the districts of Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Chittoor, Anantapur, East Godavari, Adilabad and Srikakulam under phase-I. Meanwhile, apart from government registration centres, nationalised banks like the State Bank of India, State Bank of Hyderabad and Syndicate Bank have also started registering Aadhaar cards across the state.AP tops the list in the country with over 50 lakh cards already generated followed by Maharashtra with over 23 lakh and Karnataka with 21 lakh cards so far.Registration for Aadhaar numbers is going on at a fast pace in the state, Aadhaar project in-charge and and assistant supply officer MS Seshagiri Rao has said.He said the state government has decided to release all welfare benefits only through the Aadhaar card. Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy has instructed the officials of the civil supplies department that they should ensure that the beneficiaries of the various state government welfare schemes possess Aadhaar cards for getting ration, pensions, scholarships and Indiramma housing.Seshagiri Rao said 70 percent of the state’s population have enrolled their names so far and 30 percent of the people have already got the Aadhaar number.As many as 13,45,588 got their numbers in Hyderabad followed by 6,72,795 in East Godavari and 6,27,847 in Anantapur, he said.Aadhaar cards can be used for many purposes as a source of identity for bank accounts, LPG connections, ration cards, phone connection, PAN cards etc. They will be useful to avail a number of government welfare schemes like Arogyasri.
