KOCHI: The district squad, as part of the anti-tobacco campaign has begun penalising all those who fail to adhere to the rules on the sale of tobacco.The step was taken as a measure to make public places tobacco-free in the district as well as to prevent the sale of tobacco products within 100 metres of the school premises, said District Collector P A Sheik Pareeth.A fine of Rs 200 will also be penalised from minors found using tobacco.Last month the district administration had decided to ensure the total enforcement of Indian Anti-Tobacco Act and to save children under the influence of tobacco. A joint committee of parents and police officials would be formed to work towards banning tobacco products on school premises.At least 15 smokers and 10 shop owners were penalised in the process.Stricter measures will be taken on this issue, Assistant Commissioner Narcotic Cell Joseph Saju said.
