The death toll due to incessant rains in Tamil Nadu has gone up to 87. Though Chennai is experiencing some respite from the torrential downpour for the last 36 hours, it may not last for long. Fresh mild rains are expected to lash the state capital on Wednesday.

The focus has, however, shifted to coastal Andhra Pradesh. According to the Met department, coastal Andhra Pradesh is now slated to receive the next heavy spell.

The focus in Tamil Nadu has now shifted to relief operations, and currently, as many as 50,000 people are residing in relief camps.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Navy and Air Force have been carrying out rescue operations since Tuesday and distributing food and water packets to marooned people.

With Chennai and other parts of the state remaining water logged, authorities are using boats to reach out to people.

Meanwhile, rail transport has been badly affected in both Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, with at least 25 south-bound trains being cancelled.

The situation remains grim in Cuddalore where the rain has claimed 40 lives, of which five are children.

The village roads were damaged in the heavy rains as water rose to the level of the roofs. People survived by climbing on roof tops and running away. But there were many who were helpless in tackling the situation. For instance, 10 members of a family, whose home was situated between two canals, lost their lives.

Though the rehabilitation work in the area is underway and authorities are trying to rebuild the roads. The surviving families are still in relief camps and have very little hope that the government will help them.
