We've all heard of orphanages for children, but one for elephants is rather hard to believe.

New Delhi: We've all heard of orphanages for children, but one for elephants is rather hard to believe.

The Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) has set up a first-of-its-kind orphanage centre for elephants inside the Manas National Park in Assam.

The Assam Elephant Orphanage Centre, which is to be inaugurated on Saturday, was established in wake of the increasing number of animals, particularly elephants, becoming orphan in the state.

The Deputy Chief of Bodoland Teritorial Council (BTC) Kampa Borgoyary will introduce three elephant calves in the orphanage on its inauguration. Three others would be introduced later under the supervision of WTI.

The International Fund of Animal Welfare (IFAW) would also extend support to the project and also to other cases of wildlife destitutes.
