New Delhi: Forthright, focused and dedicated, that's how Ajay Devgn is in reality.
Ajay, who started his career in Bollywood with 1991 film 'Phool Aur Kaante', has earned rave reviews of his portrayal of an honest cop and the tough yet humane gangster. His comic timing is immaculate, and dancing potential improved over the years. So when we begin to think about the range of roles that he has played, we begin to laud him for the versatility he has shown on 70mm.
On his recent trip to Delhi, we spoke to him about his 23-year long journey in Bollywood, which is no mean feat. And the star, who continued to be humble, thanked his fans for his cinematic success.
Read onto know what the actor had to say about his recent meeting with PM Narendra Modi, why Censor Board should be upgraded and a lot more.
Didn't realise I have completed 23 years in the industry: Actually, I didn't even realise that it has been 23 years since I joined Bollywood. Aisa lagta hai ki kal ki hi baat hai. Since I have been working all the time, I never had the time to think. Frankly, I have been lucky enough to never see a low phase in my life. I was doing an interview a few days back, and someone, who had analysed my career in the last 23 years, told me that only for a year I didn't give a hit. So yes, I have been lucky in that way too.
Treatment of action sequences has changed over the years: Technology has changed which is why performing action is much safe now. Ab toh cables aa gai hain. Pehle hum bina cables ke action karte they. Even today, me and my generation of actors try to do our actions on our own. But yes, it is much simpler now. As far body doubles are concerned, I have never used one. I have performed actions sequences in 'Singham' and 'Action Jackson' on my own. Jo actors khud karte hain, wohh khud hi karte hain.
Bollywood should improve its budget to make films: We can match our calibre with that of our Hollywood counterparts only if we try to improve our budget. Unke global budgets hain, aur humarey restrained budgets hain jo ab bad rahein hain. Gradually, we are reaching there and have become much better than what it was earlier. So yes, we have started to improve in a way.
Everybody has faith in PM Narendra Modi: I have always believed in him, and have known him before he was made India's PM. I always thought we needed somebody like him. Even today, till now at least, everybody has faith in him. We know he is going on the right path and is very aggressive. It is about his honesty towards work. Apart from his skills and calibre, it is his intention that helps him stand out. You need someone with an intention, which people might feel is wrong. But in his case, it isn't. He is honest with words and he decides on his own. So that is helping him.
More than satisfied with my work: I don't think about genres, but scripts. I'm happy that people loved and liked my performances as a gangster. It feels great when my comic roles are lauded. So I have been lucky in having viewers accept all my roles.
Yes, I was rebellious in my 20s: Yes, I have been rebellious in my 20s, but not in the way that I had to prove a point. I was rebellious in the way that I am like this, and this is this is how I will remain. And that stands true even now. I don't follow the norms of the industry. I do things my way. People say you should promote yourself, but I'm not like that. Hence, I don't do it.
Rivalries in Bollywood? Don't exist: I was at an event in Delhi. And I didn't know Salman Khan was also coming for it. So in the afternoon, when we got to know about it we called up and asked about hotels. Aamir Khan was staying in the room next to mine, and I went up to him to speak to him as soon as I got to know that. So this is how we are. We are very cool in that way, at least our generation. We just believe in helping and supporting each other.
Censor Board should be upgraded: I think Censor Board should be upgraded. I see what problems they create. But it doesn't trouble me because I don't believe in vulgar films, and gory actions. Take for example my film 'Singham', kids will love our action. I agree, Censor zaroori hai. Likein jo aap international cinema aur news mei dekh rahe ho wohh aapko kaha jaata hai ki aap apni films mei nahi dikha saktey. We have seen this happen when we show women being subjected to atrocities. Agar hum yeh films mei dikhatey hain toh wohh sirf negative character kar raha hai. Even though hero doesn't participate and we punish the bad guy, Censor Board doesn't want us to show it. But if you don't want to show the bad, how will you show the good? So I think, there should be a balance. Humari news mei chal sakta hai toh films mei kyun nahi dikha saktey?
