New Delhi: Doctors at AIIMS on Monday called for an indefinite hunger strike after their demand for reinstatement of a former resident neurosurgeon, who has been cleared of the charges of molesting an eight-year-old boy under his treatment, was not met.
Nearly 200 medicos including resident doctors, AIIMS faculty members, Karamchari Union and medical students 'gheraoed' AIIMS Director R C Deka's office and demanded immediate reinstatement of Dr Shejoy P Joshua.
Joshua, a neurosurgeon with AIIMS, was sacked on February 3 after the family of the boy under his treatment complained that he had molested the patient inside the doctor's duty room.
Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had ordered termination of his services.
However, a police investigation found several loopholes in the allegations against the doctor. Despite this, the AIIMS administration decided not to reinstate Dr Joshua.
At around 12.30 pm resident doctors gheraoed Deka's office and started raising slogans.
"We want AIIMS administration to allow Dr Joshua to join work. We had gheraoed the director's room since 12.30 pm. But since the demand doe reinstatement has not been met yet, we have decided to go for an indefinite hunger strike," AIIMS Resident Doctors Association president Debajyoti Karmakar said.
"We have asked Dr Deka to step down as Director because he told us that he cannot do anything about it as the termination orders had flowed from the Union Health Ministry. But now that the allegations hold no water, we want the administration to allow Dr Joshua to continue working here," he said, adding that "We will continue our protest till our demand is met."
