Bhopal: Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad workers on Monday carried out vandalism on a convent school premises and misbehaved with the staff demanding arrest of the principal for allegedly dishonouring the national anthem on the Republic Day.

About 12 ABVP workers were arrested in this connection. Police said the workers were staging demonstration outside the St Thomas School demanding arrest of the principal when they suddenly turned violent and started vandalism. Police controlled the situation.

Additional police force was deployed in the area. Meanwhile, Principal Thomas Malkacherupil was arrested after the incident, Additional Superintendent of Police A K Pandey said.

A case was registered against the principal on January 31 for disrupting rendition of the national anthem on the basis of complaint by a teacher.

According to the complaint lodged by Vedprakash Gupta, the national anthem was not rendered after hoisting of the Tricolour on the occasion of the Republic Day at the school.

When Gupta started rendition of the national anthem, Malkacherupil stopped it and suspended Gupta from the stage.
