CHENNAI: A German woman was deplaned from a Frankfurt-bound flight, just as it was about to depart from the Chennai International Airport, a little past 1 am on Sunday. The reason she was unceremoniously ejected from the aircraft, according to airport sources, was that she began abusing and assaulting her three co-travellers without any provocation. Elizabeth Merza (35), is believed to have been on a tour of the country with three other German nationals for the past month or so.The group was departing home from Chennai on a Lufthansa flight, scheduled to depart at 2 am, said a source. “Around 1 am after passengers were all checked in and on the flight, she began abusing her co-travellers in German and then even began assaulting them,” revealed the source. When even the cabin crew were allegedly unable to calm her, airport officials were called in. Immigration officials who were on duty confirmed that after a brief deliberation, she was forcibly deplaned and subdued at the pharmacy in the terminal. “She seemed disturbed and kept shouting at people without reason,” said a worker in the terminal.A police official confirmed that they were asked to contact the German consulate here around 2 am, asking them to attend to the woman. “Her co-passengers chose to leave,” he added. Around 3 am, an official from the consulate is said to have arrived and taken charge of Elizabeth, after which she departed from the airport. According to a highly placed source in the airport administration, she is undergoing treatment at a private hospital on Greams Road.
