Abductor posed as close kin of baby

HYDERABAD: The woman who had kidnapped a day-old infant from Life Spring Hospital at Mallapur on Sunday had conned security guards, staff and others, by pretending to be a close relative of the family, police said on Monday.Well before abducting the infant, she had also strolled with the baby for sometime singing a lullaby to make him sleep which did not make anyone suspect her motive, police said. The infant delivered by Shameema Begum, is yet to be traced.Clad in a yellow saree, the 25-year-old unidentified woman had approached Shameema Begum claiming her baby was also admitted there and befriended her. Shameema was sleeping with her child around 8 p.m when the woman approached her and despite the former's protests, the woman took the infant. Police said the woman gave an impression to security guards she was a relative of the boy by strolling with the boy in the premises. "Attendants of other patients in the ward thought she was a close relative of the family," Nacharam police said. According to police, a hospital staff had asked the woman as to why she was holding the boy but the woman told her she was a relative and before they could realise, she had disappeared with the boy within minutes. Meanwhile, based on the description given by Shameema, police have come out with a portrait of the woman and distributed copies in important locations and sent the same to other district police. Police officials also questioned staff members and attendants of other patients in the hospital.This is the fifth incident of a baby being abducted from a hospital in recent times. Three of them went missing from Niloufer Hospital last year while another infant was abducted from a private hospital at Chaderghat. The infant who was stolen from Chaderghat was later found abandoned on city outskirts and handed over to police.
