KOCHI: As part of the International Recycling Week, NGO Plan @ Earth has been actively involved in spreading the message in the city. A mini-van displaying “messages on recycling” has been on the move in the city since Monday. Simultaneously, volunteers of Plan @ Earth have been running from pillar-to-post encouraging shops, institutions and establishments to recycle every plastic scrap. Schools have also been roped in and the message passed to students through classes with the help of audio-visual aids.“Within just three days, we have been able to collect more than 500 kg of waste paper and nearly 50 kg of plastic. “The important aspect of this campaign is not about recycling the kind of paper that is conventionally sent for recycling like newspapers, notebooks and cartons. “It is material like bus tickets, lottery tickets, cinema tickets, punched dots and paper stuff one wouldn’t think of recycling and thus often gets mixed with other waste and ends up in a garbage pile. For every kilo of waste paper that is recycled, one tree is saved. So thanks to the cooperation of Kochiites, we have saved nearly eight trees,” claims Plan @ Earth team. Many institutions have agreed to ensure every shred of paper and plastic waste is recycled through collection schedule undertaken by Plan @ Earth at regular intervals.
