KOCHI: Complaints regarding the adverse effects of cell phone radiation are many. To reduce the radiation hazard from mobile phones, Prof P Mohanan of the Department of Electronics, Cusat, has devised a compact dual band dielectric resonator for the cell phone antenna. The mechanism serves to reduce radiation hazards from mobiles that have become a part of everyday life.“The dual band electric resonator comprises a slot antenna and a ceramic antenna that are integrated to a circuit with other components. The joint effect will annul the radiation of the cell phone towards the head side,” said Mohanan. “The antenna radiation process works on the principle of sunlight, which gets diffused equally in all directions. This way, 60 per cent of radiation heats the user’s head,” he explained. However, the dual band electric resonator deflects the radiation on one side, he said. The radiation level is measured according to US FCC rule, according to which the maximum specific absorption rate (SAR) level must be at the most 1.6 watts per kilogram. However, the revolutionary new antenna with the dual band electric resonator has been found to reduce the SAR level to as low as 0.8 watts/kg.Mohanan was given the Dr S Vasudev Award 2011 by the Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment for this project under the Science Research scheme of the Council. The selection was based on the originality of the work, scientific content and possible benefits of the finding for the future of mankind. As per Scopus, the database containing abstracts and citations for academic journal articles, his H-index, or the measure of impact is 23.
