THIRUVANATHAPURAM:  The heads of detergent companies in the country will be grinning  seeing our capital city; because, a fortune awaits them here, at least for the next three months. With the summer vacations coming to an end, the city now has all the favourable factors that are sure to trigger a boom in the sale of their products - abundant rain, countless potholes and thousands of uniform-clad students on the road.With the schools set to reopen on Wednesday and the monsoon also announcing its arrival, it has become evident that the students are going  to suffer a lot in reaching the schools safely, given the deplorable condition of our city roads.Model School JunctionIt has been over a month since the road-widening work at Model School Junction started. The Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Limited (TRDCL) authorities have said that they require at least another four to five days to complete the work and make the road suitable for travel.Holy Angels’ School JunctionThe work that has been going on for the General Hospital Junction development also remains to be completed. This includes the widening of the road, resurfacing and also installing a traffic signal post. However, the work was abruptly stopped. The resurfacing work on the road in front of the school has also been stopped midway.Pattom - Pottakkuzhy roadThe road-widening work along the road that leads to one of the city’s leading schools, Arya Central School, has been badly affected by delay in  completing the land acquisition process. Even though a major portion of the work has been completed, the work in front of Vidyuthi Bhavan is yet to take off.Meanwhile, the TRDCL authorities have promised that immediate steps would be taken on Tuesday to make these roads safe for students and other pedestrians.Nalumukku-Vanchiyoor roadThe commencement of classes in two Government Higher Secondary Schools -  girls and boys - situated next to each other at Pettah, remains uncertain as the TRDCL authorities have closed the vehicular traffic along the road completely for the speedy completion of the work. However, they said that they need at least another 10 to 15 days to complete the work.
