‘93 blasts: Ex-cop gets life term

New Delhi: The special TADA court has pronounced six more sentences in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.

Suspended police inspector Vijay Patil has been given life imprisonment.

Special TADA Judge P D Kode held that V K Patil did not deserve any leniency as he had misused and abused his official position as a police officer posted at Wethe Srivardhan police station at Raigad and ordered him to pay a fine of Rs two lakh.

VK Patil was also found guilty of allowing RDX and arms to pass through a check post.

The court sentenced Patil to life imprisonment each on the two charges of criminal conspiracy and aiding and abetting a terrorist act and ordered him to pay a total fine of Rs two lakh - Rs one lakh each for the two counts he was found guilty of.

The court said that both the life sentences would run concurrently and Patil would have to serve rigorous imprisonment for three years on each count if he defaulted on payment of the fine amounts.

Gul Mohammad, Hanif Usman Seikh, Sayeed Mohammad Ishaq, Sheikh Ibrahim and Usman Khan Shaikh get six years rigorous imprisonment for conspiracy, abetment and a fine of Rs 15,000. Rafiq Usman Sheikh has been given seven years in prison and a fine of Rs 15,000.

Uttam Potdar was found guilty of facilitating the landing of weapons at Dighi. Mohammed Lajpuria alias Mechanic Chacha was held guilty of aiding terrorist activity.
