TIRUPATI/HYDERABAD: Putting the future of about 6,289 research scholars in jeopardy, the executive council of the Dravidian University has nullified their enrolment into M.Phil and Ph.D (distance education) programmes. All of them applied after June 1, 2009 and enrolled subsequently. However, decision on 1,685 scholars who earlier moved the court is kept pending until further orders. The decision to nullify enrolments was taken during the university's executive council meeting held in Hyderabad on January 7. Further, it was decided that the fees collected from the research scholars(including late fee) shall be refunded. The university authorities did not explain as to why the scholars should suffer for the deeds of then vice-chancellor K Ramanaiah who allegedly gave admissions to them against norms. The Dravidian University was in news for admitting more than 8,000 students into M.Phil and Ph.D programmes under distance mode allegedly without the approval of the University Grants Commission and the National Council of Distance Education. Following complaints, a two-member committee was appointed by the government to go into various irregularities in the university in December 2010.Based on the committee report, the government has decided to cancel the admissions made based on applications received after June 6, 2009.  Following this, 1,685 scholars approached the court and got stay orders. "A decision on these scholars has been kept pending subject to court orders," university registrar in-charge C Varadarajulu Naidu told newsmen at the university in Kuppam on Tuesday. The university's decision came as a shock to over 6,000 students as most of them who enrolled in the 2009-10 academic year are about to submit their thesis to the university. They lament that the decision to cancel their enrolment at this point, after they have spent their precious time on research, will have a serious impact on their careers.Meanwhile, the executive council also decided to cancel the appointment of the university's director of publications DV Sravan Kumar, deputy director of publications D Udaya Kumari, associate professor K Ammulu (computer science department) and assistant professor T Shoba Rani (chemistry department). It accepted the resignation of N Eswar Reddy,  deputy director of publications, whose appointment was also under consideration for cancellation. On the controversy surrounding the appointment of Rajesh Kumar Reddy and Kiran Kumar as assistant controllers of examination, the registrar said the Lokayukta had sought an explanation from the university following a complaint and in turn, the university issued show-cause notices to the two. While Kiran got a stay from court, Rajesh gave an explanation. The council also decided to cancel the appointment of Vivekananda Gopal, professor of Tamil.
