CHENNAI: A toddler, who was playing in front of her house at Virugambakkam, was reported missing on Monday evening, in the fourth such incident recorded in the city since May. Police said the girl could have been abducted even as her parents claimed they suspected two masons, who were involved in the construction of their house. Eighteen-month-old Kavitha was last seen on the veranda of her house at Valampuri Vinayagar Koil street around 5.30 pm.Her father Ganesh, an appraiser with the Tamil Nadu Co-operative Society Bank at Porur branch was away from home and her mother Vasanthi was in the kitchen when the girl went missing.Vasanthi recalled her daughter standing near the entrance of the house around 5.30 pm. Later, when she got out of the kitchen to take the baby to bathe, she couldn’t find her. The family lodged a complaint with the Virugambakkam police after a frantic search for the little girl turned futile.“One of our neighbours, who was taking her daughter for tuition told us she saw our girl standing in the entrance of the house at 5.30 pm. She went missing between 5.30 and 6 pm,” said Vasanthi. The family members said that their house was newly built and that the little girl was very friendly with two masons, who were involved in the construction. “We had grahapravesam only on September 2. Since April, when we started the construction many had visited the site but only two persons had been here for long and Kavitha was very friendly with them. We have given the names of those two to the cops,” said Govindasamy, Kavitha’s grandfather.Kavitha’s neighbour said that the girl would hardly step out of the house. “She would always be inside the house and would rarely come out,” said Mohammad Sherif, a neighbour.Police said that they suspected the girl could have been kidnapped. “We are looking at all angles and probing. Can’t say anything more now,” said Sachidhanandham, inspector, Virugambakkam police station. Police said the girl had brown eyes and hair and was wearing a red top when last seen.
