Over 50 stones were successfully removed from the gall bladder of a 45-year-old woman at a city hospital.
The woman from Krishnagiri was suffering from abdominal pain for the past 10 years. She also had jaundice and fever, doctors said.
The bile secreted from her liver got blocked due to a stricture in the bile duct. As a result, bile got accumulated as stones in the gall bladder, doctors said.
The stones were removed after a laparoscopy- assisted procedure, which doctors claimed was conducted for the first time in the world.
According to a P S Rajan, consultant gastroenterologist, the patient had earlier undergone an open surgery to remove some stones 13 years ago. She underwent another open surgery to direct bile from liver to small bowel directly. However, the problem was not resolved.
“As the endoscope cannot reach to the closed parts of the liver, the stones were removed by entering a laparoscopic device to the gall bladder through a small incision made in the small intestine. A removable metal stent with a thread was also inserted to the bile duct after cleaning the gall bladder,” Rajan said.
Gallstones, also known as liver stones or hepatolithiasis, are primarily composed of calcium bilirubinate.
