New Delhi: Airport Authority of India (AAI) Executive Director Inderjit Singh said on Wednesday in Hyderabad that the AAI has drawn up plans to develop airports at 35 non-metro cities across the country by 2010.
Talking to reporters after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Singh said the minimum runway length at these airports would be 7,500 feet to facilitate landing of big aircraft.
The MoU was signed between AAI and the Andhra Pradesh government for upgrading airports at Vijayawada and Rajahmundry with an investment of Rs 100 crore.
With the kind of economic growth and increased air traffic being witnessed in the country, many of the airports at non-metro cities would become as important as Delhi and Mumbai in near future, the official said.
The identification of non-metro airports for expansion was done based on their potential for being tourist and pilgrimage centres, he said.
The Rs 100 crore expansion plan for Vijayawada and Rajahmundry airports involves extension of runways to a minimum length of 7,500 ft, construction of new terminal buildings, installation of sophisticated terminal navigation aid and upgrading night landing facilities.
The construction of new terminal building at Vijayawada would cost Rs 30 crore while Rs 35 crore would be spent on runway extension and installation of terminal navigation aid.
While expansion of Rajahmundry airport would cost Rs 23 crore.
The expansion works at Vijayawada and Rajahmundry would be completed in 12 to 18 months, the AAI official said.
