Former Brazil and Real Madrid's celebrated defender Roberto Carlos on Thursday backed the Los Blancos to win the upcoming El Clasico against arch-rivals Barcelona.
A world cup-winning left-back, Carlos has spent 11 seasons in La Liga with giants Real Madrid between 1996-2006, and is now a player-manager for the Indian Super League side Delhi Dynamos FC.
In a jovial mood after his side dominated against FC Pune City in an ISL encounter in Delhi, Carlos said having spent more than a decade with the Galacticos, he will be rooting for Real Madrid on November 21.
"Having spent such a long time in Real Madrid, I want them to win the El Clasico," he told reporters in Delhi.
However, Carlos also added that Brazilian forward Neymar who plays for Barcelona is the best player in the world.
"Neymar is a great friend. He is the best player in the world right now," he said.
Carlos' team Delhi Dynamos dominated Pune City in a 3-1 victory at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. With the win, the Lions moved up to the second spot in the table with 18 points from 10 matches, behind FC Goa on goal difference.
While with three points from the match the hosts put one foot in the semis, Carlos doesn’t want to leave anything to chance. “I always want more. It depends on us how the team will react after a win like today but I want more,” the Brazilian told reporters after the match," he said.
Delhi have been defensive in their previous games but on Thursday they came out all guns blazing right from the first minute. Carlos also said he was hoping his team will maintain the momentum in their next away game against Chennaiyin FC.
“Yeah, the team was more offensive than ever. But for me it doesn’t matter if we’re playing offensively or defensively, what matters is that the team understood what I was saying. It was very important to win today,” Carlos said.
Carlos had a special word of praise for Indian defenders Anas Edathodika, Adinga Ralte and Souvik Chakraborty.
“Anas is doing very well. He deserves an opportunity in the national squad, according to me. I don’t know if [Stephen] Constantine will agree. Souvik has done very well and has improved immensely and Adinga is improving a lot. It’s amazing to see how quickly they’re learning,” he said.
