Widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders of all time, Carlos Alberto Torres, was best known for scoring fourth goal against Italy in the 1970 World Cup final. That iconic goal etched his name in history books and is considered one of the greatest goals in the history of the tournament.
He ran onto a Pele pass and smashed in a thunderous shot with his right foot to give Brazil the football's most coveted trophy for a record third time. The 1970 World Cup side is known as the strongest Brazilian side ever with the likes of Pele, Tostao, Jairzinho and Rivelino also in the team.
Carlos Alberto died after suffering a heart attack in Rio de Janeiro, according to local TV channel.
The right-back began his career at the age of 19 at Fluminense but was best known for his 10-year stint at Santos. He returned to Fluminense for a brief period before playing for Flamengo, the New York Cosmos and the California Surf.
He made 53 appearances for Brazil scored eight goals. Alberto was had a deep understanding of the game and possessed outstanding ball control and dribbling abilities. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1944, 'Capita' as he is known in Brazil, also played alongside Pele at Santos from 1966 to 1974 and at the New York Cosmos from 1977 to 1980.
After retiring from playing football, Alberto had a 22-years long coaching career that started in 1983.He started his coaching career at Flamengo before moving to the iconic Corinthians in 1985 followed by Nautico Once Caldas Fluminense and many other Brazilian clubs.
He was also an assistant manager for national teams such as the Nigeria, Oman and Azerbaijan. Alberto resigned as Azerbaijan coach in 2005 after he assaulted the technical referee followed by a loss against Poland.
A statement published on Santos' official website read: "Santos FC lament the death of our idol Carlos Alberto Torres, who was 72 years old. He had played in 445 matches and scored 40 goals over the period from 1965 to 1975.
"He was considered one of the best right backs in the history of the club. The club are declaring an official mourning period of three days.
"Carlos Alberto Torres won the following titles: Brazil Championship in 1965 and 1968, Sao Paulo championship in 1966, Paulista championship over 1965/1967/1968/1969 and 1973. He was captain of the World Cup winning team in 1970."
