IIT Madras Zanzibar Introduces MTech in Ocean Structures From Academic Year 2024–2025
There are two streams in the new programme offered at IIT Madras Zanzibar campus: "Offshore and Ship structures" and "Port Harbour and Coastal structures."

A new MTech programme in ocean structures has been introduced by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras Zanzibar campus for the 2024–2025 academic year. Eligible applicants must apply for the PG programme by June 20.

Applicants for the MTech programme must have completed a four-year civil engineering undergraduate degree with at least 60 per cent marks secured. Students will be chosen for the programme based on their UG grades, with a 50 per cent weighting given to each criterion, as well as results from screening tests and interviews. Personal interviews will be held for students who pass the screening test. The screening test and interviews will be carried out online post which the institute will administer the screening test on June 30.

Professor Preeti Aghalayam, dean of the School of Engineering and Science and director-in-charge of IIT Madras’ Zanzibar campus, emphasised the relevance of this course, saying, “It is exciting to announce this new program. Blue economy is a priority area for Zanzibar and the world today, and engineering programs that will yield skilled human resources in this domain are an urgent need.”

The CGPA that students earn at the end of their first semester will determine which stream they are placed in.

A customised curriculum tailored to the demands of the oil and gas and maritime industries will be part of the MTech programme. It would include the fundamentals of marine and offshore hydrodynamics, as well as structural design for oil and gas exploration offshore platforms, ports, and harbours, such as port structures and breakwaters. Third semester courses will be taken at the IIT Madras campus in Chennai, India, while first, second, and fourth semester courses will be conducted at the international campus.

The first-ever IIT foreign campus, IIT Madras Zanzibar, opened to students in October 2023 with classes for the inaugural Academic Year (2023–24). A two-year Master of Technology degree in data science and AI and a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in data science and AI are the additional courses that IIT Madras Zanzibar Campus now offers.
