India's T20 World Cup Form Guide Update: Kohli And Bumrah Standouts, Rohit on Track But Pandya and Siraj Struggling
A look at how India's T20 World Cup 2024-bound players have fared in the five weeks of IPL 2024.

The much-debated India T20 squad was announced on April 30. As much as the chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar and skipper Rohit Sharma emphasised the fact that most of the team was zeroed down much before the start of IPL 2024, there is no denying that the IPL 2024 will be the marker for player performances as the teams head to the T20 World Cup 2024. Here’s a look at the form guide for every player in India’s T20 World Cup squad based on the five weeks of IPL 2024.

Rohit Sharma (Captain)

In 11 matches so far in IPL 2024, former Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma has scored 326 runs, striking at 154.60. You could say he has had a good run so far, but since the announcement of India’s T20 World Cup squad on April 30, the right-handed opener has played two matches, and the returns have been 4 and 11. In fact, in his last four IPL innings, 11 has been his highest score, with the other three being single-digit scores.

Hardik Pandya (Vice Captain)

The Indian vice-captain and the Mumbai Indians skipper have not had a good IPL 2024 so far, and with MI more or less out of contention for the playoffs, Pandya’s first season as skipper will end in disappointment. On a personal front, Pandya has 198 runs in 11 matches, striking at 147.76 with a highest of 46. With the bat, Pandya has failed to give the desired impact. With the ball, while it is heartening to see India’s premium allrounder bowling full tilt for most of the tournament, his returns here also have been average—8 wickets in 11 matches at an average of 37.12 and an economy of 11.00.

Yashasvi Jaiswal

India’s backup opener, Rohit Sharma’s first-choice opening partner, had a horrendous start to IPL 2024. At one point, it seemed that he could lose out in the race for a place in the T20 World Cup squad, but the youngsters’ timely 104* against Mumbai Indians, roughly a week before the team was announced, may have worked out in his favour. He went on to add 24 and 67 in his next two outings, and currently, his stats – with 316 runs in 12 matches, striking at 157.21 and an average of 35.11 – make for a decent reading.

Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli’s form has been stellar right from the start of IPL 2024, and he continues to maintain a strong hold over the Orange Cap this IPL 2024 with 542 runs in 11 matches, striking at 148.08 and an average of 67.75. Two days before the squad announcement, Kohli hit an imperious 70* vs Gujarat Titans and made 42 against the same opponent three days later in the reverse fixture.

Suryakumar Yadav

After missing the initial few games for Mumbai Indians recovering from knee surgery, Suryakumar Yadav had mixed results at the start of the tournament with two ducks and two fifties to his name, and that has continued. He notched up a score of 56 vs his former IPL Kolkata Knight Riders in the last match but also registered scores of 10, 26 and 10. The last of which came on the squad announcement day.

Rishabh Pant (WK)

The DC skipper, with 398 runs in 11 matches at a strike rate of 158.56 and an average of 44.22, has dispelled any doubts fans would have had over the Maverick batters’ impact after the 14-month injury layoff. He is 8th in the Orange Cap list in IPL 2024 and has not been too shabby behind the stumps. He has not played any games since the squad was announced, but in IPL 2024, he has three fifty-plus scores to his name batting at No.4.

Sanju Samson (WK)

The Rajasthan Royals skipper has been in sublime form this IPL, and the fact that his team was leading the points table for the majority of the first five weeks of IPL 2024 boded well for the Kerala stumper. In 10 matches, he has 385 runs, striking at 159.09 and an average of 64.17, but he endured a two-ball duck a day after the squad was announced.

Shivam Dube

The Mumbai allrounder made all the right noises leading up to the squad announcement day, scoring 350 runs in nine matches, striking at over 170 and averaging over 45. However, since the squad announcement, Dube has registered two consecutive ducks. Despite that, he is 13th on the Orange Cap list, which is an achievement, considering he has not batted higher than 4 throughout the season. With the ball, he was not employed by Chennai Super Kings until May 1, and when he bowled, he got the wicket of Punjab Kings’ Jonny Bairstow.

Ravindra Jadeja

Primarily flying under the radar due to Dube’s heroics with the bat, Jadeja has had a quiet season by his standards. Still, being the clutch player he is, he has put in quite impactful cameos with the bat and the ball throughout the season. He may only have eight wickets to show in 11 matches, but he has been miserly in the middle overs going at an economy of 7.26. He has 202 runs with the bat, striking at 135.57 with one fifty to his name. In his last game vs PBKS at Dharamsala, he put in an all-round effort of 43 with the bat and 3/20 with the ball to help CSK win.

Axar Patel

Jadeja’s understudy in the squad, Axar, has been utilised more as a bowler than a batter by Delhi Capitals this season. And similar to Jadeja, Axar’s standout stat is the economy of 7.24 in 11 matches. He only has nine wickets to show, but he has proved his worth as a bankable bowler in the league. His economy is third – after Jasprit Bumrah and Sunil Narine – in the league among bowlers to have bowled at least ten overs in the IPL 2024.

Kuldeep Yadav

Axar’s DC teammate had a promising start to IPL 2024, picking up six wickets in his first three matches, which then tapered off. He did have 4/44 against SRH but has gone wicketless on three occasions in his eight games, and the economy has shot up to a not-so-comfortable 8.51.

Yuzvendra Chahal

With 13 wickets in 10 matches, Yuzvendra Chahal finds himself at 10th in the Purple Cap list in IPL 2024, but the economy rate is slightly worrying at 9.68 RPO. He took at least one wicket every game but has gone wicketless in his last two matches. A day after the squad announcement, SRH batters took him for 62 runs in his four overs.

Arshdeep Singh

Arshdeep’s strike rate (15.73) with the ball has been quite decent throughout the IPL 2024, but the worrying factor is the economy of 10.06. He has been struggling, particularly in the death overs, to plug the run flow, and even though he has 15 wickets in 11 matches, he has had a very average tournament so far. After the squad announcement day, the Punjab fast bowler returned figures of 1/52 and 2/43, both against CSK.

Jasprit Bumrah

The Indian bowling lynchpin is the season’s leading wicket-taker so far, with 17 wickets in 11 matches. His economy of 6.25 RPO is the best in the league among bowlers to have bowled at least ten overs. Simply put, Jasprit Bumrah has been in a league as a bowler this IPL season.

Mohammad Siraj

It was rather baffling to see Mohammad Siraj get the nod for the T20 World Cup squad selection, considering he only has 10 T20I games under his belt, and in this IPL, he has been off-color. In 10 matches, he has eight wickets at an average of 44.00 and has leaked runs at 9.26 RPO.
