Dale Steyn after the SA vs NEP game revealed that he was rooting for Nepal against his own country as he likes an 'underdog story'.

The underdogs Nepal put up such a valiant fight against the mighty South African side which even resulted in the former Proteas pacer, Dale Steyn rooting against his country when the two sides faced off in the T20 World Cup 2024 group-stage game at the Arnos Vale Stadium in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on Saturday.

Speaking after the nail-biting thriller, Dale Steyn had revealed in a video that he sees that game as probably the game of the tournament and was rooting for Nepal when the match went down.

“It was incredible to watch. I think the match of the tournament to be honest with you. I’m a big underdog fan, so even being a South African, I was kind of like, come on Nepal, you know like, you were spurring them on, these nail-biting thrillers. I saw people crying in the stands, it shows you how much it means to the people and I think, that’s what cricket is all about”.

“Not the two hundreds, this is what the game is about. I think it would have been the talk of the town if Nepal had gotten over the line. It would have been fantastic, and they almost deserved to,” he added.

South Africa ended up taking the win by just 1 run. But all the talk was about Nepal’s commendable spirit in what was a tough challenge considering the Proteas coming in red-hot form coming in undefeated.

Nepal needed just 2 runs in the final delivery but a run-out meant it was heart-break for the underdogs. But they will have a chance to walk away on a positive as they take on Bangladesh in their final game of the tournament and a win could be on the cards for Nepal. A win might be just what the side needs to light up the cricket fever within the country.
