Shreyas Iyer could only manage 9 runs in the first innings, while India's mosr recent Test debutant Devdutt Padikkal went for a four-ball duck

The Indian domestic season kicked off today with the revamped Duleep Trophy format featuring four teams. Team A and Team B, comprising of India Test players and hopefuls are playing at the M Chinnasway Stadium, Bengaluru, while Team C and Team D – led by Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shreyas Iyer are playing at the Rural Development Trust Stadium, Anantapur.

Team C won the toss and elected to bowl first against Team D and on what looks like a pacer-friendly track Team D were in early trouble. After losing opener Atharva Taide for just 4 runs in the first over itself, Team D fell further when their skipper Shreyas Iyer fell for just 9, poking at an away-going delivery from Vijaykumar Vyshak in the 6th over itself. Iyer could only manage to face 16 deliveries and scored one boundary before edging one to wicketkeeper Abhishek Porel.

Iyer, after a string of low scores, was dropped from the Indian Test team for the last three Tests of the India vs England series earlier this year. In the Buchi Babu Tournament, Iyer had managed scores of 2 and 22.

Iyer is in a middle-order scrum to find a place in the Indian squad alongside the likes of Sarfaraz Khan, Rajat Patidar, and Devdutt Padikkal.

He was coming off an under-par Maharaja T20 Trophy, scoring 253 runs in 11 matches.
