A Tamil Nadu man named Dasa Chideshswamy from Thanjavur city completed his engineering course in 1997. Later, for two years, he worked in a private company. In 1999, he decided to commence organic farming in his 90 acres of agricultural land to lend support to his father. What has caught everyone’s attention is that he has been growing summer crops and earning lakhs. Reportedly, the family grows about 30 different types of fruits like mango, pomegranate, guava, jackfruit, chikoo and various other vegetables as well. Dasa Chideshswamy — in his high-tech nursery named Dari Nursery — has been producing timber trees, various fruit plants and various ornamental plants as well, which are sold all over India.
In 1996, he was inspired by his father’s summer crop cultivation on the two-acre land which yielded amazing results. In that year, news regarding the cultivation of timber was featured daily in the newspapers. News related to the smuggling of these trees was also a common phenomenon at that time. Reportedly, 200 kg of timber were smuggled in the trunk of a car and were sold at a price of up to Rs 1,500 per kilogram. After realising the high demand and soaring prices of these, it was revealed that the yield of these is highly profitable in Andhra Pradesh. After that, Dasa Chideshswamy’s family enquired about timber trees from the forest officials and researchers.
Then, they procured the seeds from Andhra Pradesh and cultivated 2,000 saplings in the nursery on the two-acre land. Before planting, friends and relatives questioned their decision and asked why they invested so much in cultivating timber and what kind of profit they would make. But Dasa Chideshswamy’s father did not pay heed to their opinions and planted the trees, hoping for profitable business in the near future. Now, it has been almost 27 years and they got permission to cut down the trees. In the forthcoming months, they will be selectively cutting down heavy trees.
Due to age-related ailment, Dasa Chideshswamy’s father passed away a few years ago. Dasa faced challenges in managing the farm. He sought permission from the government and gained approval to convert the summer cultivation land into a nursery. He cultivated about 2,000 plants and exported them to foreign countries and gained more than Rs 50 crore in profit.
Benefits of Timber wood:
Timber wood is widely used in countries like Japan and China. The Japanese people are known to make musical instruments out of it; while in China, the tree is used to produce medicines. Apart from this, various types of household appliances and furniture are also made of timber wood in China and sold there. The Chinese people believe that timber trees possess strong and positive energy which will keep evil spirits at bay. There were recent reports of using this tree as a conductor in nuclear power plants in areas with high radiation.
