The Centre for Agricultural Sciences in Tamil Nadu has initiated entrepreneurship programs to empower rural women, focusing on skill development and value creation from local produce. In a recent training session held in Kamakshipuram, Theni district, women are learning to craft handicrafts from banana fibre, tapping into the abundance of banana cultivation in the region.
Several women have successfully transitioned into entrepreneurs with the support of the Centre for Agricultural Sciences, which offers various training courses encompassing skill development and technical expertise. The ongoing banana fibre handicraft training in Tamil Nadu aims to equip women with the skills needed to create handmade products from wasted banana fibre.
Given the significant banana cultivation in the Theni district, the training program is strategically aligned with local resources. The handmade decorative items crafted from banana fibre are commissioned by Khadi and Village industries, providing a market for the products and supporting the local economy.
Commencing on December 4 and scheduled until December 16, 2023, the handicraft training aims to empower women with the knowledge and tools necessary to establish their businesses. Approximately ten women participated in the program, learning to create over 60 types of decorative items using banana fibre. The participants expressed their intent to utilise the acquired skills to produce their handmade products after completing the training.
Banana fibre is sourced from the base of the banana plant, including its leaf sheath. The cultivation process involves the extraction, processing, and sorting of banana fibre. Notably, banana fibre cultivation is eco-friendly, requiring minimal energy and chemicals. The fibre is woven on electric-free looms, contributing to sustainable and environmentally conscious practices. Beyond Tamil Nadu, banana fibre cultivation is also carried out in various parts of the world, such as Ecuador and Costa Rica.
