The Sunday Times Rich List in the UK, which lists the 1,000 wealthiest people or families in the country according to their total net worth, puts Gopichand Hinduja, the chairman of the Hinduja Group, at the top. The Hinduja family has been rated the wealthiest in Britain for six years running, according to the Mirror. Based on the ranking, Hinduja’s net worth increased to around £37.196 billion (Rs 3.94 trillion) from £35 billion (Rs 3.70 trillion) the year before.
On the list, businessmen Leonard Blavatnik and David and Simon Reuben and family come after Hinduja. Their respective net worths were £29.24 billion (Rs 3.09 trillion) and £24.97 billion (Rs 2.64 trillion).
Born in 1940 in India, Gopichand Hinduja, often known by his shortened name GP, is the chairman of Hinduja Automotive Ltd. He assumed leadership of the group, following the dementia-related death of his brother Srichand Hinduja last year.
Gopichand earned his law degree from Jai Hind College in Mumbai in 1959 and is also the recipient of an honorary doctorate from the University of Westminster. Additionally, Gopichand holds an honorary doctorate in economics from Richmond College in London. Gopichand’s father, Parmanand Hinduja, founded the Hinduja family company in 1914.
According to the Hinduja Group’s official website, Gopichand was among the architects who turned the company from an Indo-Middle East commercial venture into a multibillion-dollar multinational corporation. Following Srichand’s passing, a family dispute over ownership of the business arose.
The children of Srichand claimed that their family was being neglected. From the family, further precise information on the split is still pending. The four brothers, Gopichand, Prakash, Ashok, and the Srichand family, presently own the company together.

Gulf Oil was one of the most significant purchases made by the Hinduja Group in 1984, and this year’s dividend payment to shareholders will be the largest yet. In 1987, the company also acquired Ashok Leyland, which is currently the biggest car manufacturer in India.
Under Gopi’s leadership, their primary British business, Hinduja Automotives, recorded a £2 billion (Rs 211.58 billion) revenue in 2021.
