Former President Donald Trump was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital after shots were fired at his rally on Saturday.
The hospital is about 17 kilometres from the Butler Farm Show grounds, where the rally was held. Patients were first in shock to hear that former US president Donald Trump was shot.
However, they were also happy when they saw Trump walking into the hospital on his own, a new footage going viral shows.
20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire at the former president’s rally, shooting the former US president and top contender of the November polls in the ear.
He was soon shot dead by US Secret Service agents.
Karen Allen, president of Butler Memorial Hospital, however, told CBS News that they were ready if the unthinkable happened.
“The Secret Service actually came to our hospital and walked through. There was a plan in place if something happened. I think we hoped that it would never happen, but we knew that it was a possibility,” Allen was quoted as saying by the broadcaster.
Hospital staff treated Trump’s ear injury as the facility went into lockdown. The hospital leadership stated that a plan was in place for such a scenario.
Having held previous rallies in the area, the Secret Service and the hospital had a plan in place for emergencies, the broadcaster said in its report. When the hospital went into lockdown, some staff were unable to enter or leave, and ambulances had to be rerouted.
The former president was swiftly brought in by the Secret Service, while other agents and police secured the facility. Multiple layers of security surrounded the hospital. Trump later expressed his gratitude to the hospital staff for their quick action.
