The Indian officials have formally requested French authorities to approve the extradition of liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya ‘without preconditions’, a new report revealed.
This request was made during a meeting earlier this month, where the topic of Mallya’s extradition was raised in the 16th session of the India-France Joint Working Group on Counter Terrorism, held on April 15.
The Indian delegation is reported to have sought an update on the status of India’s extradition proposal to France during the discussion.
“The French offered a (extradition) proposal with some preconditions (but) India asked them to approve the proposal without any preconditions,” a source told The Indian Express.
As per the sources, India has been actively pursuing Mallya’s extradition, especially with countries where he holds property and where extradition treaties are in place. This approach aims to facilitate extradition proceedings in case Mallya travels to any of these countries, including France.
The 16th Meeting of the India-France Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism took place in New Delhi last week. The Indian delegation was led by KD Dewal, Joint Secretary (CT) at the Ministry of External Affairs of the Republic of India. Meanwhile, the French delegation was headed by HE Ambassador Olivier Caron, Special Envoy for Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime.
Mallya, often dubbed the ‘King of Good Times,’ is accused in a bank loan default case exceeding Rs 9,000 crore, involving his now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines. He has been residing in the United Kingdom since March 2016. The Indian government has declared him a fugitive, and many of his assets in India have been auctioned off.
