Zomato's 'Pure Veg' Fleet Sends Internet into a Frenzy, Netizens Share 'Dietary Confusion' Memes
Zomato's 'Pure Veg Fleet' sparks hilarious memes on social media after foodies get confused over 'dietary' choices.

Zomato’s CEO, Deepinder Goyal, made waves on March 19 with an announcement on X (formerly Twitter): the launch of their exclusive veg-only fleet. This new feature, accessible via a toggle button on the app’s main screen, allows users to seamlessly order vegetarian delights from select restaurants, complete with delivery by specially designated partners adorned in vibrant green.

While the announcement stirred up a storm of opinions, it garnered more criticism than praise. Many on the internet voiced concerns about potential social divisions and increased risks for delivery partners, even hinting at tensions between tenants and landlords. Amid the confusion, numerous questions arose, leaving people scratching their heads.

However, the excitement was short-lived as the announcement swiftly underwent alterations. The distinctive green colour scheme was retracted after the CEO acknowledged the negative implications of such segregation. Within a day, an update was issued, assuring, “We have decided to remove the on-ground segregation of this fleet on the ground using the colour green…This will ensure that our red uniform delivery partners are not incorrectly associated with non-veg food, and blocked by any resident welfare associations (RWAs) or societies during any special days… our rider’s physical safety is of paramount importance to us.”

Despite the rollback of the green colour, Zomato remains committed to offering its veg-only service, albeit without exterior indicators. Delivery partners affiliated with this fleet will exclusively serve orders from vegetarian establishments. Other venues, such as purely non-vegetarian eateries or those offering both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, will not be part of this service.

Meanwhile, amidst the commotion, public speculation abounds that Zomato’s move was primarily a publicity stunt and over time, it aims to cultivate habits that can be capitalised upon.

Even CEO Goyal hinted at future plans to introduce more specialised fleets catering to diverse customer needs. “For example, there’s a special cake delivery fleet coming up with hydraulic balancers which prevent your cake from getting smudged during delivery,” he shared on ‘X’ on March 19.
