You’ve probably heard the saying that “a woman is often her own worst critic," and this notion came to life on the internet recently. An AI Engineer at Tata Consultancy Services took to LinkedIn to critique Mamaearth’s founder, Ghazal Alagh, accusing her of prioritising a pregnancy photoshoot “for the world to see," rather than focusing on her child’s well-being.
In her own post, Mrs. Alagh shared glimpses of her pregnancy journey, proudly stating, “This year 4 managers in my innovation team are pregnant and we have taken the highest revenue goal on innovation." She even shared a photograph showing off her baby bump.
However, Prakriti Sharma, the woman who reposted Mrs. Alagh’s pregnancy photoshoot, seemed displeased. She remarked, “Posting about being stupid and harsh on herself during pregnancy and seeking validation for the same from the internet makes it even awful to watch. Ladies pls be mindful about who you look upto & do not follow any bullshit advise served on the internet." Little did she know that her judgmental post would backfire, as many began supporting Mrs. Alagh.
“Prakriti, I think your take on Ghazal Alagh’s decision/choice is not only unkind, but it reveals a shallow understanding of ambition, work ethic, and the reality of pregnancy," lamented one user. “As someone who worked through both my pregnancies I can assure you that there is absolutely nothing unsafe in working till delivery unless there is any medical condition. In fact the gynaecs encourage you to be active. It is sad to see a woman bringing down another woman (very much playing into the stereotype!)" said another.
A third one added, “I have worked throughout my pregnancies and actually also gone for jungle safari, snorkeling and multiple outings. Know of enough women who continued to run, as adviced by their docs. It’s best to understand your capabilities, your body and your medical conditions rather than limiting yourself for an absolutely natural phenomenon of life."

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to social media’s intolerance for nonsense!
