If you are wondering why everyone is suddenly eating cucumbers, it’s because of TikTok creator Logan Moffitt. They say you are what you eat and if that’s true in any universe, he is definitely “cucumbers”. Early last month, the 23-year-old content creator from Ottawa posted a video of a recipe for cucumber salad on TikTok. He has now shared dozens of videos on social media showing him preparing a fast supper with this basic ingredient. He is now referred to as “cucumber guy” by his online followers. These recipes include lightly diced cucumber with a range of sauces and garnishes.

A user re-shared one of Moffitt’s recipes on X (formerly Twitter). The TikToker can be seen finely slicing the cucumber at the beginning of the video. He then added MSG, cheese, half an avocado, finely sliced onions, and salt and pepper. Then he covered the container with the lid and gave it a good shake to blend all the ingredients.

People are enamoured with his videos, referring to him as the “most hydrated person” on TikTok and even stating that he is the only reason their grocery store runs out of cucumbers.

The online grocery store FreshDirect reported a 172% rise in cucumber sales in July compared to the same month last year, the senior vice president of merchandising told Buzz Feed.

Moffitt has long favoured cucumbers. In a phone interview with the New York Times, he stated, “I’ve been eating them like candy since I was a kid.”

The content creator, who started cooking for his family at the age of 14, claimed that before his recent rise in popularity, he merely utilised his TikTok account for casual cooking videos.

He drew inspiration from TV personalities such as the well-known YouTube chef Laura Vitale and the English chef Jamie Oliver.

However, he credits the famed Korean chef Maangchi for starting him on his cucumber journey.

Meanwhile, on a now-viral X video, people had a variety of opinions.

A user stated, “Logan Moffitt’s trend highlights the powerful influence of social media on consumer behaviour and market dynamics. Retailers will need to adapt quickly to keep up with the demand.”

Another user said, “Made this for dinner yesterday, was *approval emoji*.”

A user claimed, “That’s insane, I went to the store yesterday and they were totally out of cucumbers too!”

Only time will tell if the enthusiasm lasts beyond cucumber season. Meanwhile, to produce as many of these clips as he can, Moffitt is probably consuming two to three full cucumbers per day.
