A 75-year-old man from Georgia suffered an unfortunate incident when his attempt to open a packet of chips with a lighter caused an explosion, leaving him with burns. According to a New York Post report, the man suffered 75 % burns on his body due to the accident.
According to a news release from the city, the fire started on January 3 at roughly 4:30 pm. Firefighters discovered the man and the recliner he was sitting in had been scorched by fire when they got to the apartment building three minutes later.
Until firemen came, maintenance personnel assisted in containing the fire with a hose, according to officials. Firefighters added that during their investigation, they discovered that the man had used the lighter to open the bag of chips since he was unable to do so with his hands.
Approximately 75% of his body was burned in the third degree, according to local officials.
After being taken to a Chattanooga, Tennessee, hospital, he was sent to a burn centre. As of January 5, Dalton’s condition and the burn centre to which he was transferred were unknown to Dalton’s representatives.
According to a CNET article from 2022, some chips can catch fire because their main ingredients are oil and carbohydrates. A University of Greenwich study found that because they are high in fat and calories, they can easily ignite fires. An incident from Ontario in 2016 also demonstrates how chips can easily spread fire.
Back then, two teens aged 14 and 15 had entered Longo’s Supermarket in Vaughan, Ontario and set fire to a packet of chips, immediately fleeing the scene. The chips had caught fire easily and the fire had spread to half the supermarket, requiring firefighters to arrive at the scene to douse the fire.
