Google Pixel 9 series launch is likely to bring an end to the 2-year-old Pixel model but will the foldable also go off the shelf now?

Google introduced the next generation of its flagship smartphone series, the Pixel 9, at the annual hardware event ‘Made by Google earlier this month. The company launched four smartphones along with the Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Buds 2 Pro at the event.

The newly launched Pixel 9 series lineup includes the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Soon after the launch, the company discontinued the sale of select previous-generation Pixel devices in India. Google stopped selling the Pixel 7 series and the original Pixel Fold foldable smartphone.

The tech giant seems to have killed the original Pixel Fold and the Pixel 7 series phones. Reports suggested that its first Pixel Fold will be going off shelves from now along with the Pixel 7 series phone. But recent updates suggest Google will only stop the sales for the Pixel 7 models and keep the Pixel Fold available in select countries.

Google Pixel Fold

Launched in May 2023, the first-generation Pixel Fold marked the entry of Google into the foldable smartphone market. Powered by Google’s custom-made Tensor G2 processor, Google Pixel Fold, was offered in 256GB or 512GB storage options.

Google Pixel Fold was launched at $1,799 (approximately Rs 1,50,000) for the base model with 256GB of storage. The phone came in two colourways—obsidian and porcelain. Google offered the 512GB storage variant in the Obsidian colour only at $1,919 (around Rs 1,60,000) and the product never made its way to the Indian market.
