In a bid to make coding easier and fun for everyone, Apple has introduced its new iPad app - Swift Playgrounds - that allows users to develop apps with Apple's programming language.
The Swift Playgrounds app is aimed at students with no previous programming experience and also at experienced programmers who want to experiment with app-making.
The app comes with built-in templates that users can modify and build on to create their own programs with graphics and touch interactions. Users can then share their creation with friends through mail or message or post it to the web.
Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering said, "More than 100 schools around the world have already committed to adding Swift Playgrounds to their fall curriculum, and we can’t wait to see what students create with it."Also Read: Teaching kids to code just as important as teaching them any other language: Apple's Tim Cook
The app uses real Swift code and projects can hence be exported directly to Xcode and can ultimately be turned into full-fledged iOS and Mac apps.
Swift Playgrounds includes Apple-developed programming lessons that guide students through a series of challenges and puzzles to guide three on-screen characters through an immersive graphical world as they learn core coding concepts, like issuing commands, creating functions, performing loops and using conditional code and variables. Apple will be regularly releasing new standalone challenges.
The app is available on the App Store for free and compatible with all iPad Air and iPad Pro models and iPad mini 2 and later running iOS 10.
