Aranmanai Kili stands as one of the popular films in the Tamil cinema industry, marking the directorial debut of renowned actor Rajkiran. The film opened doors for numerous stars seeking recognition in the South Indian movie industry, including actress Gayathri, who made her debut with this movie. Alongside Rajkiran, the lead roles were played by Gayathri and Ahana. The film’s engaging storyline and captivating music, composed by Ilaiyaraaja, contributed to several evergreen hits in South Indian cinema.
Gayathri’s performance, especially in the song Raasave Unnai Vida, earned acclaim from both the audience and critics. Despite her initial reluctance to enter the film, she later became a prominent figure in the entertainment industry, appearing in the Zee Tamil serial Gokulathil Seethai.
In Aranmanai Kili, Gayathri portrayed the character of Chellamma, a villager, showcasing her versatility as an actress. Interestingly, she was initially slated to debut in the 1992 film Chembaruthi, directed by RK Selvamani, alongside actors Prashantha and Roja. Due to undisclosed reasons, her participation in the film did not materialise, leading her to audition for Aranmanai Kili.
During an interview with Tamil Behind Talkies, Gayathri revealed that she was initially hesitant about accepting the role but changed her mind upon learning that Ilaiyaraaja was composing the music. She also shared an intriguing anecdote about the filming of the hit song Adi Poonguyile. The song took eight months to record due to the search for the perfect location featuring green grass, mountains, and waterfalls. However, the delay was mainly caused by the absence of rain, forcing the crew to wait for the right conditions.
Following her success in the film, Gayathri eventually married and settled in Chennai. Her journey from being chosen among 100 girls for a significant role to becoming an acclaimed actress reflects her talent and contribution to the Tamil film industry.
