New Delhi: This is not the first time BJP leader CC Patil has found himself roiled in a controversy. In January this year, he assumed the high moral ground on womenswear, saying, "I personally don't favour women wearing provocative clothes and always feel they need to be dignified in whatever they wear." He further argued that women should know how much skin they should cover.
Patil was referring to an Andhra DGP's statement last year that women invited rapes by dressing up in salwar kameezes.
Patil said that women were raped and sexually harassed when the moral values among men declined. The strong undercurrent of his argument was that "provocative" dressing on part of women led to decline in men's morals.
"Today's lifestyle makes it mandatory for women to work like men and live on equal terms with them. So women work in IT companies and call centres at night. They ought to know how much skin they should cover when they leave for such work places. Thus, I leave the issue of their dressing to them," he said.
