Ever since the Narendra Modi government took over there has been a sea change in the governance of the country. The government has brought in a sense of purpose, speed and efficiency.
Right in the beginning, the Prime Minister himself arranged a bus load of senior bureaucrats for a meeting with them in an open discussion and free for all exchange of ideas. Specifically, corruption was scowled upon and series of administrative steps were initiated to curb it. Bureaucracy weighed down by century old files rotting in various corridors of government offices in Delhi was liberated when the Prime Minister himself took the lead in throwing away useless ones.
Administrative procedures were put in place to ensure the work of his Council of Ministers were regularly monitored to ensure there is no slippage between what was achieved against what was promised.
To gain confidence of the people he established direct rapports through Radio talks 'Maan ki Baat' on Sundays where he addressed different class of people such as farmers and children. He invited students across the country on Children's Day and Teacher's Day to open up and share their thoughts with him and give constructive suggestions.
His call to clean up India through Swaccha Bharath Abhiyan is revolutionary and aimed at cleaning up the country from village level to cities and metros. It has ignited a spark which has spread to public utilities such as the Railways, banks, schools and offices. His campaign to clean up the Ganga has echoed strong sentiments in Varanasi and elsewhere in the country.
He is attempting to establish some kind of Rama Rajya. This is the first of a kind in India where the Prime Minister is leading by example in pushing and prodding his countrymen to achieve good governance and cleanliness as part of their work ethos.
Government also means business by acting tough with militants and not to allow frequent incursions from Pakistan-sponsored militants. Pakistan learnt the hard way that they have to deal with a much tougher government which will not stand any nonsense across the border. They have also learnt there won't be any talks unless they behave properly and that this government will extract revenge if Pakistan is foolhardy to try its misadventure.
This was what was promised, this was the core of election platform and having been elcted the government was seen acting towards fulfilling its promises made to the public. In essence one felt Yudhisthira had taken over to rule the country.
Compared to this, it is hard to understand what's happening in Jammu & Kashmir. The ruling party at the Centre formed a government with Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP), thus raising hopes of a stable period in the troubled state.
However, the hopes have been belied with separatists gaining control and calling shots on a daily basis. The coalition government seems to be pulling in different directions.
Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed seems to show blind faith in separatists and has released quite a few hard-core criminals who openly hobnob with Pakistan. There is a concerted effort to bring separatists into the main stream thus creating a sense of lack of direction by the state government.
Hardline and separatists leader Masarat Alam has the guts and temerity to wave Pakistan flag and raise slogans against India. If this is not sedition wonder what else is? Syed Ali Geealni continues to be intransigent. Why has the government allowed separatists to run things way they want which are clearly against the interests of the country?
If separatist openly call for agitation against India, call for bandhs, aren't these anti-national activities? Why is the state goverenmt and Centre blind to all these divisive forces?
BJP in particular seems to be taking a softline policy which is totally opposite to the view they held when they were in opposition. Post poll arrangements is one thing, country's interests is something else. There cannot be a compromise between the two. While acting like Dharmaraja or Yudhisthira at Center it appears BJP is acting like Dhritharashtra in Jammu and Kashmir.
