Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party sprung a surprise in Uttar Pradesh, winning 37 out of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in the state. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was down to 33 seats in the biggest state in Lok Sabha while the Congress won six seats. The state is being seen as the turning point in Lok Sabha elections 2024.
The state saw some of the biggest contests this election. Prime Minister Narendra Modi won from Varanasi against Congress’s Ajay Rai. While Akhilesh Yadav won the Kannauj seat, his wife Dimple Yadav won from Mainpuri. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi won the Raebareli seat while party leader Kishori Lal Sharma defeated BJP’s Smriti Irani in Amethi.
